SMART AQUAPONICS
DEVELOPMENT OF INTELLIGENT MANAGEMENT TOOLS FOR AQUAPONICS

What is aquaponics?

Aquaponics is a soil-less agricultural production technique that combines aquaculture (breeding of fish or aquatic organisms) and hydroponics ( vegetables cultivation in a nutrient solution). By combining these two techniques, the water enriched by fish excrement is used to fertilize the plants, and the water filtered by the plants can be returned to the fish. In fine, the waste from each production system recycled the raw material of another.

Reduced demand for water and synthetic fertilizers for vegetables production

Reduced fish excrement discharged or to be treated before discharge

Possible production in environments inappropriate for horticulture (polluted soils, urban areas, drylands, ...)

The Smart Aquaponics project

Smart Aquaponics is an Interreg France-Wallonia-Vlaanderen cross-border cooperation project. Its objective is to promote the development of aquaponics among communities and professionals, through the development of digital tools for training, design and monitoring.

The project is carried out by 14 operators and is coordinated by the Research Center for Urban Farming of the University of Liège.
